No Fear

By Kristina Lipatov

The fundamental human need: love. Social media is flooded with memes about anxiety, emotional emptiness, and a kind of numbness of the soul.

Far too many identify with this reality. How does one express emotions when an entire generation considers social ineptitude more fashionable than speaking openly about personal feelings?

I know him from Instagram

With incredible support from VIRUS, the short film No Fear was created as the directorial debut of Kristina Lipatov, produced by Karl Leon Behr, and with myself as production designer in early 2019 in Hamburg.

This project is a great example of the vital role social media platforms play today. Kristina and I had been following each other on Instagram for quite some time—her networking brought together a diverse crew of creative minds, turning the shoot into an extraordinary experience.

Visually grounded in the realities of Generation Y, Kristina’s brilliant screenplay crafts moments of deep intimacy and tells the story of a young boy’s longing for his older brother in a dysfunctional family.

A (Nonexistent) Touch of Hamburg

I was able to inspire the community of one of Hamburg’s last occupied houses for our project.

The highly risky filming location—prone to power outages, cable fires, freezing temperatures, and a dilapidated structure in need of renovation—posed a significant challenge. It was cleared out, partially restored, and transformed into a livable space.

Although the tone of the story suggests desaturated imagery, we embraced a rich spectrum of colors: pastel tones in the fashion shots, and intense, almost overexposed hues in the cinematic scenes. The cool, austere charm of Eastern Bloc modernism served as my inspiration for a run-down setting marked by strong patina—reflecting the passive-aggressive character of the father while simultaneously allowing for poetic visuals within the decay. A heavy haze of cigarette smoke lingers over everything.

While Hamburg is widely recognized as a major hub for commercial film productions, we were able to uncover many lesser-known locations, crafting a unique perspective on the city.
