Inner Sound Worlds as Light Sculpture

The creative process in all artistic fields—especially music—is shaped by an unpredictable flow of ideas, detours, and unexpected synergies. At the same time, a musician faces the challenge of synchronizing technical mastery of their instruments with the emotional depth of inner soundscapes, transforming them into a composition that reaches outward.

LUMINALE Frankfurt 2018

„In Motion“ is a collaboration between photographer Natalie Färber and motion designer Tim Hoh, capturing and visualizing the movement sequence of a jazz musician while playing. Movement, time, and space serve as the defining artistic elements.

The musicians are photographed using long exposure, allowing the visible forms and structures within the image to emerge directly from their movements—the physical expression of the musician interacting with their instrument.

With its interdisciplinary approach, In Motion aims to help jazz shed its heavy, niche image and reach a new audience. For Luminale 2018, the project took shape as an immersive spatial installation with stage design, set within an old production hall in Frankfurt’s eastern district.

concept

The irregular geometric structure within is seamlessly enveloped in light through large-scale projections of photographs and movement animations from the outside. Fragile panes made from rectangular profiles and gauzy surfaces allow glimpses into the inner action space—symbolizing the inner sound worlds of a musician. However, depending on the intensity, rhythm, and speed of the music, visual ruptures are meant to occur—just as jazz thrives on improvisation and auditory breaks.

We use high-translucency stage gauze, ensuring that the structure’s outer shell shifts in presence depending on the lighting inside. The installation is rotated 30 degrees from the hall entrance and maintains a deliberate distance from the existing walls, allowing visitors to walk around it freely. Cubic fragments are scattered irregularly within the atmospheric haze of the installation, inviting guests to sit, take in the artwork as a whole, and experience it from varying distances.

Contrast Trio

The atmospheric soundtrack of the exhibition was composed with great sensitivity by the musicians of Contrast Trio, interpreting various currents in jazz. After our joint debut at Luminale, the In Motion team, under artistic direction, developed a further visual realization of the soundtrack for the exhibition, which we presented for the first time at a concert in Kunstverein Familie Montez to mark the Spotify release of the accompanying EP.

The emotional essence of the inner sound world is translated into another artistic form through a music video, synchronized with the musical composition. Both harmony and restlessness—equally integral to the creative process—are expressed through a dance choreography by Nami Miwa. Filming, led by DOP Georg Gilstein, took place at the Academy for Interdisciplinary Processes in Offenbach with the invaluable support of its founder, Lutz Jahnke.
