IN MOTION – Luminale Frankfurt 2018 / Contrast Trio Movement and stillness are inherently linked. IN MOTION transforms the inner sound worlds of musicians into a spatial light sculpture. The creative process—especially in jazz—is shaped by shifting ideas, detours, and unexpected connections. Musicians constantly balance technical mastery with emotional expression, translating intangible sound into form.
Developed for Luminale Frankfurt 2018 in collaboration with photographer Natalie Färber and motion designer Tim Hoh, the project visualizes the physical gestures of jazz performance through long-exposure imagery. Movement, time, and space become visible structures. Accompanied by an atmospheric soundtrack by the Contrast Trio, the installation bridges disciplines and invites new audiences to experience jazz as a vivid, contemporary art form.
Stage + Exhibition Design
— Spatial Concept
A rigid, industrial framework structures the space—mirroring musical theory as a system of rules. Within it, a translucent cube unfolds immersive audio-visual content: painted light moving freely, like improvisation within constraint. Neon accents and stark lighting heighten the contrast between control and spontaneity. Black cubic seating elements punctuate the space, inviting pause.
At the entrance, bar-like reception furniture integrates information, shop, and hospitality, creating a place of arrival and stay. This transforms the temporary site into a fully functioning museum environment—where structure meets experience, and visitors engage both physically and atmospherically.
